PURIFIED & UPCYCLED QUEBEC BLACK BEAR OIL
ANCESTRAL USE
Used for generations by Indigenous peoples, black bear fat was renowned for its moisturizing, soothing, and protective properties. Rich in omega-6, omega-9, and palmitic acid, it greatly promotes the regeneration of the skin's moisture barrier.
Did you know that during hibernation, this fat is essential for the black bear: it allows it to maintain its energy, vitality and muscle mass without eating for several months!
Why is sport hunting for black bears legal in Canada?
Sport hunting of black bears is legal in all Canadian provinces. Banning it would risk causing an overpopulation of black bears, creating a food shortage and forcing bears to leave their natural habitat and approach inhabited areas, which would harm their survival and their coexistence with humans. Black bear hunting has been strictly regulated for several decades. Hunters must hold a special permit and can only hunt in designated areas. Although black bears are not endangered, this regulation helps maintain a healthy population.
The North, in complete transparency
At Le Nordet, we are committed to clarifying our approach with sincerity and integrity.
We do not practice any form of hunting: our oil comes from a process that is fully regulated and authorized by the Quebec government, in compliance with the laws and with respect for wildlife.
Black bear hunting is a regulated activity that exists independently of our company. We simply choose to repurpose an often-overlooked resource—bear fat. We source it from a local tannery, unrelated to Le Nordet, instead of having it discarded. We do not affect the number of black bears hunted in Quebec in any way.
Thanks to a responsible upcycling approach, this fat is purified into a high-quality oil, which we incorporate into our skincare products.
A sustainable, ethical gesture rooted in the circular economy and waste reduction.
Is the black bear an endangered species in Canada?
The black bear has been designated in the "not at risk" category by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC).
