Why is black bear sport hunting legal in Canada?
Why is black bear sport hunting legal in Canada?
Sport hunting of black bears is a legal and regulated practice in all Canadian provinces. A total ban could, paradoxically, harm the species by leading to overpopulation and a scarcity of food resources , thus forcing bears to leave their natural habitat and approach inhabited areas. This would jeopardize both their survival and the harmonious coexistence of the species .
In Canada, black bear hunting is highly regulated and part of a tradition of responsible wildlife management. Each hunter must hold a specific permit and respect designated hunting areas . The Canadian black bear is not an endangered species , but hunting it is strictly controlled to preserve the natural balance and health of the population .
At Le Nordet , we receive our raw materials through a process entirely supervised by the Canadian government .
We do not participate in any form of hunting.
Our role is part of an upcycling approach :
With or without us, bear hunting already exists. We simply collect the black bear fat from this regulated hunt , purify it, and transform it into a high-quality oil —a resource that would otherwise be lost, respectfully reused in our skincare products.

What is the story behind your key ingredient?
What is the story behind your key ingredient?
Primarily discovered and used by indigenous peoples for its healing properties, bear oil, extracted from bear fat, is rich in omega 6-9 and palmitic acid, which have powerful restorative powers on the skin . Did you know that the concentrated biologically active elements found in black bear fat are necessary for the animal during hibernation to maintain optimal levels of vitality ?
Born and raised in Canada, our founder learned about the historical use of black bear fat. Amazed by this practice, he decided to repurpose, into skin care products, the black bear fat that is otherwise discarded following the recreational bear hunting season by registered Canadian hunters who have no connection to Le Nordet Canada.
It's important to note that we receive our oil through a government-controlled and supervised process , and our company does not engage in any form of animal hunting. We adhere to an upcycling ethic. Bear hunting exists, with or without us. We simply upcycle black bear fat into purified oil for our skincare products, instead of it being discarded by registered recreational hunters who have no connection to Northern Canada.
What is an upcycled cosmetic ingredient?
What is an upcycled cosmetic ingredient?
An upcycled cosmetic ingredient is a material derived from a by-product of another process or industry , which is repurposed rather than discarded . In other words, the raw material used was not produced for this specific purpose, but is given a second life through a sustainable and traceable process. These ingredients thus help reduce waste and minimize the environmental impact of supply chains.
At Le Nordet , we fully embrace this upcycling ethic .
Following the regulated black bear hunt in Canada — conducted exclusively by registered recreational hunters , with no connection to our company — we recover bear fat , a resource that would otherwise be wasted.
We purify it and transform it into a high-quality oil , naturally rich in omega-6 and omega-9, which we incorporate into our skincare products.
With or without us, bear hunting exists: our approach is simply to give this precious material a new life , in a logic of respect and sustainability.
What is the difference between “recycled” and “upcycled”?
What is the difference between “recycled” and “upcycled”?
"Recycling" refers to producing something of less value than the raw material. With "upcycling," you produce something of greater value than the existing raw material.

Silky and luminous, never greasy.
Our Lumière du Nord products do not use any synthetic collagen : they help to hydrate, nourish and illuminate the skin, without leaving a heavy finish.
The serum helps revitalize the skin's appearance and promotes better absorption of the cream that follows. Its light texture absorbs quickly and provides a pleasant feeling of freshness.
The cream helps to protect the moisture barrier and maintain the skin's suppleness and comfort .
Apply a small amount — about the size of a pea — to the face and neck, morning and evening, after the serum.
Our formulas are highly concentrated: a small amount is enough to provide lasting softness and comfort.
Even naturally oily skin needs hydration.
Skin that lacks water can react by producing more sebum , which accentuates shine or the feeling of shiny skin.
By maintaining balanced daily hydration , the skin gradually regains its healthy, soft and even appearance , without excess.
